Marcy Palmer, Curly Clematis: Mental Beauty
Marcy Palmer, Curly Clematis: Mental Beauty
1/3, 2023, silver leaf archival metallic ink vellum and varnish, 11 × 14 inches.
This work and the following three works are part of Palmer’s series, “Graritude Poems”. In the artist’s own words: The works in this project are in honor of the women who paved the way for women's equality. Inspired by and loosely based on floriography (the use of botanicals to symbolize an idea or message), the plants used in these images symbolize different positive attributes (for example, Amur Honeysuckle - generosity, happiness) that I associate with these women. The works are archival inkjet prints on vellum, which are cut, drawn on with archival ink, varnished, and collaged with silver leaf, which is associated with femininity. These “visual poems” are acts of gratitude for the women who came before me and created the rights that I have.
Marcy Palmer grew up in the historic city of Saratoga Springs, NY. As a child, she spent time exploring the outdoors which fueled her imagination and play.
Marcy’s work explores themes of beauty and healing through the lens of photo history, nature, and science. Integrating various approaches to image-making from contemporary to historical practices, Marcy is influenced by the earlier practitioners of photography, and the Surrealist and Bauhaus movements. Recently, Marcy’s interests have focused on botanicals, and their various uses in medicine and healing, as methods of communication, and as symbols of the greater good.
